This policy explains how Hungry Hiker (“we”, “us”) collects, uses, shares and protects your personal information when you visit hungryhiker.co.za, place an order, join our newsletter or contact us. We are based in Durbanville, Cape Town, South Africa, and we handle your information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

Who we are
Hungry Hiker sells dehydrated hiking meals and related trail products online and delivers within South Africa. Our website address is https://hungryhiker.co.za. You can contact us at orders@hungryhiker.co.za or on WhatsApp at 071 318 0215. For the purposes of POPIA, Hungry Hiker is the responsible party for the personal information described below.
What information we collect
When you place an order or create an account: your name, email address, phone number, delivery and billing address, order history, and any notes you add to your order. If you create an account we also store your login details (your password is stored in encrypted form).
When you pay: payments are processed by our payment provider, Yoco. Your card details are entered on their secure payment page and are not stored on our website or seen by us. We receive confirmation that a payment was made, along with the order details.
When you join our newsletter: your email address (and name, if you give it to us). Newsletter sign-ups are managed through MailerLite.
When you contact us: if you use a contact form, email us or message us on WhatsApp, we keep your name, contact details and the contents of your message so we can reply.
When you browse the site: technical information such as your IP address, browser type, device, the pages you visit and how you arrived, collected through cookies and similar technologies (see below).
Comments: if you leave a comment on our Adventure Blog, we collect the details in the comment form, your IP address and your browser user agent string to help detect spam.
How we use your information
We use your information to: process and deliver your orders; take payment and keep financial records; send order confirmations and delivery updates; set up and manage your account; respond to your questions and requests; send our newsletter and special offers if you have subscribed; keep the website secure and prevent fraud and spam; understand how the website is used so we can improve it; and meet our legal and tax obligations.
We rely on one or more of the following grounds under POPIA: it is needed to carry out our contract with you (for example, to deliver your order); we have a legal obligation; you have given your consent (for example, to receive marketing emails); or it is in our legitimate interests (and yours) to run a secure and well-functioning shop.
Marketing emails
We only send marketing emails to people who have signed up to our newsletter or who have opted in when ordering. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us to remove you at any time by emailing orders@hungryhiker.co.za. Unsubscribing from marketing does not stop service emails about your orders.
Who we share your information with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with trusted service providers who help us run the shop, and only as much as they need to do their job. These include: our hosting provider (Xneelo), who stores the website and its data; Yoco, for payment processing; courier and delivery partners, who receive your name, address and phone number so they can deliver your order; MailerLite, for our newsletter; Jetpack/Automattic, for site statistics and performance; Optimole, which delivers and optimises our images; Wordfence, which protects the website from attacks; and Google Drive, where encrypted-in-transit copies of our website backups are stored.
We may also disclose information where we are required to by law, or to protect our rights, for example in a fraud investigation.
Some of these providers are located outside South Africa. Where that is the case, we only use providers that apply appropriate safeguards to protect your information.
Cookies
Our website uses cookies, which are small text files stored on your device. We use essential cookies to make the shop work (for example, to remember what is in your cart and to keep you logged in), and analytics cookies to understand how visitors use the site. Cookies set when you log in last for up to two weeks, or for a few days if you do not choose “Remember me”. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, but parts of the shop, such as the cart and checkout, may stop working if you do.
Embedded content and links to other websites
Pages on our website may include embedded content such as videos, social media links or maps. This content behaves in the same way as if you had visited the other website directly, and those sites may collect data about you and use cookies. We link to our Facebook and Instagram pages; please read their privacy policies to see how they handle your information.
How long we keep your information
We keep your information only for as long as we need it for the purposes described above. Order and payment records are kept for as long as South African tax and company law requires (generally five years). Account details are kept while your account is active. Newsletter details are kept until you unsubscribe. Comments and their metadata are kept until they are deleted. Enquiries are kept for as long as needed to deal with your request.
How we protect your information
We take reasonable technical and organisational steps to keep your information safe, including secure (HTTPS) connections, a website firewall, regular backups, and restricting access to people who need it. No online system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you and the Information Regulator as required by law.
Your rights
Under POPIA you have the right to: ask what personal information we hold about you; ask us to correct or delete information that is inaccurate, outdated or no longer needed; object to our processing of your information, including for direct marketing; withdraw your consent at any time; and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa) at www.inforegulator.org.za.
To use any of these rights, email us at orders@hungryhiker.co.za. We may need to confirm your identity first.
Children
Our website is not aimed at children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us their information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version is always on this page, with the date it was last updated shown at the top.
